Games get Buena Vista play

Studio creates Disney DVD Game World line
By Laurence Lerman 6/22/2006

JUNE 22 | NEW YORK—Buena Vista Home Entertainment is getting serious about DVD games, creating a new DVD line called Disney DVD Game World.

The line offers a collection of interactive family DVD games inspired by and featuring popular characters and environments from Disney films.

The announcement was made at the Licensing International 2006 show here this week.

The first two titles, which use on-screen game pieces and spinners, are Disney Princess Edition, wherein players compete for a chance to become a Disney Princess à la Ariel, Cinderella and Jasmine, and Disney Dogs Edition, which allows players to adopt their favorite Disney dog from such movies as Lady and the Tramp and 101 Dalmatians and play to win the “Blue Ribbon Challenge.”

Each DVD features trivia questions, games and other activities that must be solved to advance around a virtual game board. The games are scheduled for release on Dec. 5 (prebook Oct. 24) for a suggested retail price of $29.99 each.

Global Video Game Market Set for Explosive Growth

PricewaterhouseCoopers' new report "Global Entertainment and Media Outlook: 2006-2010," is forecasting major growth for the video game sector worldwide. By 2010, the global gaming market is expected to hit nearly $47 billion. More within...

By Lora Kolodny

By 2010, the worldwide video game market should grow to $46.5 billion, at an average 11.4% compound annual rate, global consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts.

That compares with the filmed entertainment business, which PwC estimates will grow at a 5.3% compound annual rate, to become a $104 billion market by 2010, or the television networks business expected to grow at a 6.6% rate to $227 billion.

The estimated $8.4 billion U.S. video game market of 2005 likely will grow at a slower clip than other sectors, at 8.9%, to hit $13 billion in 2010, lagging Asia Pacific and the combined region of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, according to PwC's "Global Entertainment and Media Outlook: 2006-2010."

GAMESTOP - 4490 stores globally

Wednesday 06.14.2006 STREET LIFE, By Andy Serwer, www.fortune.com
GAMESTOP: I know what you're thinking, and you're right: A video-game retailer's days must be numbered, right? It must be getting killed by Big Box retailers like Wal-Mart and Best Buy, and/or eventually these games are going to be online Well some folks think otherwise; stock (Research) was raised to ``buy'' from ``neutral'' at UBS AG. (Get this, the company - the pride of Grapevine, Texas - has 4,490 stores globally. Shoot! That's a lot.) Stock has been a monster, up from single digits in '03 to a high of $49 earlier this year. And now? The stock ain't cheap. I'm not saying these stores will go away anytime soon, I just wouldn't want to be there.

Tanning provides golden opportunity

Tanning provides golden opportunity
Big Blue franchisees grow with Palm Beach Tan
By Susanne Ault 6/16/2006

JUNE 16 Since Steve Berkman, a former director of eastern U.S. franchise operations for Blockbuster Inc., joined Palm Beach Tan six years ago, he has enticed enough Blockbuster franchisees to join the tanning chain so that independent Blockbuster owners now operate half of Palm Beach Tan’s stores.
Palm Beach is on a quest to build the first national tanning chain and has grown from 22 locations in and around Dallas to 109 outlets in 18 U.S. markets. Approximately 55 Palm Beach outlets are owned by Blockbuster franchisee owners, including Southern Stores, Capital Entertainment and Movie Merchants.
Tanning and video rental have long been combined in independent stores. Video Buyers Group boasts more than 400 video/tanning combo retailers as members and Movie Gallery, the No. 2 chain behind Blockbuster, is dramatically accelerating the number of salons it operates, according to rival retailers.
