Avid iTunes downloaders will have to wait a few more weeks to sample Apple’s set-top box, the AppleTV.

The set-top box was set to hit stores in February, according to remarks company CEO Steve Jobs made in January, as he unveiled the $299 gadget that will wirelessly transfer downloaded videos from the computer to the TV set.

The Apple TV launch date has been pushed to mid-March, according to an Associate Press report.

Company spokeswoman Lynn Fox told the news service that it had taken “a few weeks” longer than anticipated to get the Apple TV ready to ship.

The 40GB device will hold up to 50 hours of video.

The Apple TV box connects wirelessly to a Mac or PC, synching up to iTunes 7 and a user’s personal iTunes library for user-friendly remote access to all the content stored there.

The box connects to the TV via several options including HDMI and component video ports.

“It’s really, really easy to use,” Jobs said in January at the annual Macworld conference in San Francisco. The Apple TV box is also capable of 720p high-definition video playback.

The box was designed for widescreen TVs, Jobs said.
